d.c. sports fans have reason to celebrate. the nats won the nl east. >> is in the team's first title since moving to d.c. eight years ago. fox 5's dave ross is live outside nats park, home of the division champion with some reaction. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: how good does that sound. home of your national league east champions. for the first time, they came here in 2005. i'll never forget covering that team, that very first team. it felt like an expansion team. just seven, eight years later, the nat are champs of the nl east. they didn't win the game yesterday against the philadelphia phillies, losing 2- 0. but that was academic. in the top of the ninth inning, everybody here at nats park got the good word that atlanta had lost in pittsburgh 2-1. so that was. it the magic number was zero and your washington nationalled became national league east champs for the first time ever. it really is and historic time

in serious condition. no word of if the two incidents are related. today mark 10 years since the snipe anterior attacks which terrorized the d.c. region began. ten people were killed and three others hurt during the shooting spree. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were eventually captured and convicted. protestors plan to march at noon from freedom plaza to the department of vet an affairs and then tonight, they will have what is being dub the a sleepful protest outside of the bank of america are on l street. making headline this morning, the pope's former butler takes the stand today in a controversial case involving allegedly stolen files. >> also head, president obama and job nominee mitt romney gettingied for tomorrow night's debate. one candidate says it will be about something bigger than who wins and who loses. time now is 6:07. i'm barack o obama and i approved this message.

officials in hong kong say six crew members have been arrested for a deadly boat collision. they're being questioned for endangering people's lives according to china's police chief. at least 37 people were killed and dozens more injured after a boat carrying utility workers collide wade ferry. the boat began to sink immediately following the crash. survivors say the ferry did not stop after the collision. the trial of the former butler for pope benedict xvi is resuming this morning at the vatican and for the first time, the former personal assistant will be questioned in court. he is facing charges of stealing personal letters and documents from the pope. he says he leaked the files to expose, quote, evil and corruption. the presidential candidates, they are getting ready for the big day tomorrow night. first debate will be held at the university of denver. president obama has been at a desert resort in nevada for the last couple of days. he has been going through mock

debates and mitt romney has also been practicing. he arrived in colorado yesterday and told thousands of voters he thinks the debates will be something bigger than just the winner. you've probably heard the warning that most americans could be in for a tax like come november. there is good news to report on that front. >> also ahead, customers of a d.c. food favorite paying a little bit more now. details on a food truck tax when we come back. too many americans are struggling to find work

in today's economy. too many of those who are working are living paycheck to paycheck trying to make falling incomes meet rising prices for food and gas. more americans are living in poverty than when president obama took office and fifteen million more are on food stamps. president obama and i both care about poor and middle-class families. the difference is my policies will make things better for them. we shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. we should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job. my plan will create twelve million new jobs over the next four years helping lift families out of poverty and strengthening the middle-class. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message because we can't afford another four years like the last four years. ♪

towards waldorf, la plata, haven't seen a whole lot overnight. out to the east, out towards annapolis as well. the bottom line, it is a cloud cover day with some rain showers on and off expected for your tuesday. let me show you the bigger picture. area of low pressure out to the west. as we switch maps, you can see the rain showers that are across the carolinas. thank you very much. lots of rain showers to our south and to our south and west. and some of these will be moving in during the course of the day. the rain showers will be intermittent. it won't rain every minute today but it will be on and off throughout the day as we deal with a warm front that is coming through, an area of low pressure pushing to our west. we'll be on the warm side of this one. that means mild temperatures. not only today but for the next couple of days. our highs later today will be back in the mid-70s. currently, 66 in washington with the rain showers off to the north and west a little cooler. 59 in frederick. there is your area of low pressure. it fill as it gets up into the great lakes. for us, warm front will bring us some showers and maybe a

industry antiaheaded up towards the accident scene at nutley street. also a crash reported in the left lane eastbound 66 approaching marshall. that is tying up the left side of the roadway. here we go on the metro's red line single tracking between van ness and metro's red line. additional time needed on metro's red line because we are single tracking this morning. the crash was northbound 28 to eastbound 66. that has been cleared so the lanes are open. traffic still heavy on 28 and delays out of the manassas through centreville eastbound along 66. accident activity, occoquan road at route one. follow police direction to get by. the trip northbound on i-95 tied up with delays leaving here. southbound 270, lanes are open, heavy slow and steady. her delays as you continue into germantown. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. -timetraffic.

massive automatic federal budget cuts. they are set to take effect in just three months now. one thing set to go, bush era tax cuts. a new study says you could pay a hefty price if congress doesn't renew them. according to the tax policy center, a typical middle income family would see its taxes go up about $2,000. a family making between $110,000 and $140,000 zoo see a like in the $6 how range. congress may not let that happen. the "new york times" reports that senate leaders are working on a three-step plan to avoid the automatic cuts that lawmaker would hammer out in the post-election session. elec and here is more you will have to pay for. lunch just got a little more expensive at d.c.'s food trucks. the owners had always paid a flat $1500 tax. now, the city is implementing the sales tax act and food trucks are no longer immune. they have to charge 10% on every sale. the tax went into effect

we'll get to that in just a second. we'll start off with metro's red line where we have major tie-ups. they are single tracking between van ness and dupont circle. now, to your commute traveling north of town, we have accident activity westbound randolph road at dewey road. stay to the left to get by. no accidents reported southbound along 270. it is about a 48-minute commute right now. that is with all of your lanes open. still slow moving, the trip eastbound along 66. this is where we have accident activity approaching marshall. all of the lanes here are open. however, we do have problems to report eastbound along 66. crash was before nutley street. it is still here crowding the left lane and most of it is confine to the shoulder. that seems to be the delay coming eastbound from fair oaks. that's a check of your fox 5

he was struck. police say the car was a white chevy impala that might have front end damage. it is hard to believe but it has been 10 years to the day since the d.c. sniper attacks began. ten peopleen killed and three others were hurt during the shooting spree. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were eventually captured and convicted of the killing. malvo who is now 27 is serving a life nps with no parole in virginia. in an interview with the "washington post," he admits there is no way to properly convey an apology to the families of his victims. still ahead, one big name actress is a new mom this morning even they she never officially confirmed she was pregnant. >> president obama and mitt romney continue prep rigs for tomorrow's debate. a new poll shows a shake-up could be in the works. back in a moment. house, both camps are gearing up for tomorrow night's debate in denver. republican nominee, mitt romney is, in colorado practicing mock debates. >> president barack obama stayed behind closed doors yesterday and a new poll from the george washington university and politico shows that the president remains out front. we get more on the poll and the debate preparations from tom fitzgerald. >> i'm willing to do more. >> reporter: after the campaigns focused on virginia last week, by monday, both were into full debate prep mode. the president in nevada, mitt romney in boston. >> if i become president -- no, when i become president -- >> reporter: the new poll shows president obama leading mitt romney 49 to 47% nationally among likely voters.

and what they've done here is they've done satellite imaging. see the darker spots, that is the cooler areas of the city. that is staten island there on your bottom left and manhattan. you can kind of see central park. >> okay. >> if we show the next map, it corresponds directly to where there is the thickest vegetation or where the coolest temperatures are. where you have concrete and asphalt, we are not going to show the second map but there is a second map. you will find the cooler temperatures. >> where you don't have the concrete and asphalt. >> yeah. >> at nighttime, we talk about the heat rising back into the air. it is harder for that to occur, sometimes impossible for that to occur, when you have these asphalt concrete surfaces and the like. when you have vegetation and natural ground, it radiates

quite easily back up into the atmosphere. >> there is a left discussion about whether this contributes to global warming. most experts think it probably doesn't. it is small in scale. something else that is fascinating, the downwind, areas that are east of big urban areas have a tendency to have more rain. it is because all the heat, the air rises. as the air rises, it condenses as it cools so there is more energy in the atmosphere for heavier rain. >> this side of 81, east of 95, it is done primarily to give you a locator. however, you will find that, in the wintertime, when weather

good morning, everybody. i'm holly morrison on this tuesday. we're here to get your kids to eat well. because studies show that if kids are healthy eaters they will physically develop better and be smarter and that's why october has been declared national farm to school month. it is all about getting school to develop partnerships with their local farmers so that they can get their kids to eat better and we are lucky because in all of the nations, one of the schools that does it better, we're live here at a dc public bilingual charter school. this morning, i know it seems quie right now but in a matter of minutes this will be bustling with kids and kids eating breakfast. we will see what is on the menu and where it came from and if the kids like it. they have their own garden and classroom curriculum that is about eating healthy and living healthy. so i would like to say we were
